Windows 11 – Requirements

Windows 11 is out and ready for business. We have been running it on all our compatible computers all week, and nothing that stands out as a step backwards. Few things to consider, if you are keen to install.

Windows 11 splash screen

  1. Microsoft will tell you if your hardware is compatible through Windows Update. The specification that is challenging some, is the TPM 2.0 chip required inside the computer. This is used to encrypt data and validate the data drive and motherboard are undisturbed. Sadly even some of our workshop machines are without and will be stuck on Windows 10.
  2. You might just need to enable TPM 2.0 in your BIOS, if you have a modern gaming PC or enthusiast machine, as those are often disabled by default. If your machine was over £700 and less than 2 years old, your odds are decent you will be compatible.
  3. It’s not really that different, just looks more modern. Unlike a few previous OS updates, there are no killer features, but more about the user experience. Gamers might be the exception, with DirectX 12 support, but other than us lot, not sure any gamers read these posts :).
  4. If you believe you have compatible hardware, you might still need to wait a few weeks before Microsoft has certified the hardware and is ready to support Windows 11. Windows Update will keep you posted on this front.

If you need any help, determining if you can run Windows 11, please give us a call or drop us an email.

Global outage of Amazon, Paypal, news sites and more

Huge global outage occurred just before 11 today (GMT) affecting large amount of the internet, particularly solutions hosted by Amazon AWS. Microsoft 365 is hosted by themselves and unaffected.

We recommend avoiding any transactions or posting to cloud systems hosted on AWS from applications, until this is resolved.

Microsoft Translator – Using it in Teams

Microsoft has a free to use voice to text and translator app for web browser or phone. What is particularly cool, is you can have it running at the same time as a Teams meeting, and the non native speaking attendees can join to get a transcript of the meeting in their native language. Great for breaking down language barriers. Especially useful for fast talkers like me, who often forget to slow down 😁.

Conversations – Microsoft Translator

Can’t imagine it will be long before this becomes a killer feature within Teams, as a native solution.

Microsoft Teams Rooms is one of the coolest things I have seen in years

Microsoft Teams Rooms is the solution for meeting rooms using the popular Microsoft Teams communication system.

For any Marie Kondo fans out there, this is sparking a lot of joy! From the cool way Teams knows I sitting in the meeting room with my laptop, so offers to mute my audio during the meeting so the meeting room audio doesn’t get feedback, to the dual screen presentations where one screen displays lovely faces, and the other a crystal clear picture of the presentation. Teams audio off

Working from home

Just a little update from us. Everyone at F8 is in good health and spirits, productively working from home. We would all like to thank our clients for adapting to these strange times, mucking in and doing some of the unboxing, initial setting up and general setup steps we normally would come out and do.

We are fully staffed and answering the phones as normal, so just get in touch if there is anything we can do to help!

Not clear yet when we will be back to normal service, attending site for maintenance visits etc, but we will email when getting closer to the time to ensure it is in line with the site’s requirements.
